This is the graphic story of ‘modern’ art movements from the 1860s to the 1920s,
and explains how artists reacted to the rapid social, economic and technological
changes of the period - especially photography. Wonderful ‘isms’ abound as Pop Art
approaches, from Impressionism to Post Impressionism, from Cubism to Surrealism,
Russian Constructivism to Futurism. The speaker, a first-class honours graduate of
the Open University and art history tutor for the University of the Third Age, adopts
her title from the 1980 BBC series on how artists change, and are changed by, society.
